YouTube integrations that hold attention

Most brands buy the first sixty seconds of a YouTube video, which is the part the audience has been trained to skip.

The convention exists because it is easy to sell and easy to verify. It survives because nobody asks for the retention graph, which would show that the audience has not yet committed to the video when the brand segment arrives.

Ask for the retention data

Creators can share audience retention curves for comparable videos. They show where viewers leave and where the video holds. Placing the integration after the point where retention flattens buys a smaller audience that is considerably more committed, and it usually costs less than the pre-roll.

Choose the shape deliberately

  • Integration: cheapest, borrows the credibility of a video the viewer chose.
  • Dedicated video: expensive, right when the product needs explaining.
  • Shorts: frequency, best cut from long-form you already paid for.
  • Series sponsorship: builds association over time, at the cost of flexibility.

Write it to belong in the video

The segment should feel like part of what the viewer came for. Give the creator the argument and the proof points; let them build it in their own structure. A segment that changes cadence, lighting and vocabulary announces itself as an advertisement and gets skipped whatever its placement.

Value the long tail

A YouTube video keeps accumulating views for months and keeps appearing in search. That makes a good integration worth considerably more than its first-week numbers suggest, and it is worth agreeing titles and descriptions with that in mind.

Related questions

  • Usually, but the retention curve is the arbiter. Some creators hold their audience from the first second, in which case the pre-roll is genuinely valuable and priced accordingly.
